Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick “is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death.  Hence as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.” (CCC, no. 1514)

With only one priest at most parishes these days, there is no certainty of a priest being available when a loved one is dying.  But there is no need to wait until that “last moment;” this sacrament of healing can be celebrated whenever there is serious illness, a weakened condition in the elderly, or prior to surgery.

The Anointing of the Sick is celebrated every first Saturday  during the 8:00 a.m. Mass, for anyone with a serious illness or upcoming surgery.  If unable to attend that Mass, phone the rectory at 522-0181 to schedule a visit. (If hospitalized outside of Alameda, ask the hospital to contact the local priest.)

Visiting the Sick:  If you are hospitalized in Alameda or sick at home and would like to have someone from the parish visit you and/or bring the Eucharist to you, please call the rectory at 522-0181 and we’ll be happy to make arrangements for a visit.  (If hospitalized outside Alameda, ask the hospital to contact the local parish for Visitors to the Sick.)
