LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

Altar Servers

Students in the fifth through eighth grade are invited to participate in the parish community by signing up to assist at the liturgies as altar servers.  Being an altar server offers students opportunities to grow in faith and love of God through sharing their gifts with the parish.  These young women and men give example to all who worship at St. Joseph. When people see them participating through listening, praying and singing, they too feel more comfortable about praying and singing themselves.
Training is provided and a commitment is required from the student and his or her parents.  Altar servers are usually scheduled to serve twice a month.  A schedule is prepared so each server is aware of the liturgy at which they will serve.  Servers unable to fulfill their assigned responsibility are asked to find a substitute.

Altar Society

St. Joseph Altar Society is open to all in the parish who wish to assist in maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of our liturgical vessels and vestments.  This ministry exists side-by-side with the Care and Cleaning Ministry and complements its service.
Members currently benefit St. Joseph Community by cleaning and pressing the altar linens and vestments, cleaning the sacred vessels, and maintaining candle stands and sconces.  In addition, this ministry provides the service of placing envelopes in pews for special collections.  If you would like to take part in beautifying our Basilica and preparing for our liturgical celebrations, please call Marge Johnson at 510-523-7237 or Eric Bertelsen at: ebertelsen@sjbalameda.org.

Arts and Environment

During the liturgical year, the Church unfolds the whole mystery of Christ, from his Incarnation and Birth through his Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  The tradition of decorating or not decorating the church for liturgical seasons and feasts heightens the awareness of the festive, solemn, or penitential nature of these seasons.  Human minds and hearts are stimulated by the sounds, sights and fragrances of liturgical seasons, which combine to create powerful, lasting impressions of the rich and abundant graces unique to each.
We are seeking ministers who have an artistic eye, a spiritual soul and a practical work ethic to bring their talents and creative instincts to our Art and Environment Team.  We welcome all hearts and hands ready and eager to prepare our Basilica for worship.  For more information, please contact Eric Bertelsen at:  ebertelsen@sjbalameda.org.

Care and Cleaning

The members of our Care and Cleaning Ministry help to keep our Basilica clean and beautiful at all times.  They help to prepare a warm and inviting environment for all who gather for community worship.  Ministers donate an hour of their time one Saturday a month. Please consider being part of this vital and satisfying ministry. It is truly a work of faith and love.
Duties include, but are not limited to: dusting altars, sacristy, sanctuary, kneelers, vigil lights, stands and pews, and the grotto.  They clean glass counter tops, the sacrarium, the baptismal font and holy water fonts.  Ministers also straighten the books and clean up any debris. If you would like more information you may contact Maryann Montandon at danm@alamedanet.net.

Eucharistic Ministers

Are you looking for a real connection with your fellow parishioners?   Ministers of the Eucharist serve the assembly by distributing the Body and Blood of Christ.  Sharing of the Eucharist is the heart of the Mass for all baptized Catholics.  We are committed to reaffirming our parish community’s faith in the real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist as we celebrate the whole  person of Jesus Christ.
We schedule Eucharistic Ministers in advance so you know ahead of time when you are scheduled to serve; generally no more than once or twice a month.
Eucharistic Ministers are asked to arrive early for Mass and find their own replacements if they are unable to serve.  A list of Ministers is supplied with each schedule.  Your attendance at training and periodic meetings as will as convocations in the Spring and Fall is essential for your on-going formation.    For more information you may call Mike  O’Connor for weekend scheduling at 510-522-4770 or e-mail him at emstjoe@yahoo.com and Marge Johnson for daily Mass scheduling at 510-523-7237.

Lectors

I believe that Allen Brings, author of “Reflections on the Art of  Lectoring” said it best:  “We who are given the task of proclaiming the Word of God at Mass must be able to shed our own skins and assume the masks of Peter, Paul, Abraham, and, whenever necessary, even the Lord God, as when Ezekiel and others write ‘Thus says the Lord God!’”
Today we must continue with the efforts of generations past.  Lectoring is an art with historical foundations dating back to the time when the Christian community gathered to hear the Word of God, because many in the community were not able to read themselves.  We must proclaim the Word of God aloud to help God’s message take a journey in our own lives.  The Sacred Scripture cannot have meaning as long as the words remain as letters on a page; they need a voice.  Let that voice be yours!
As a lector you will attend a one-hour training session and will need to participate in a Convocation/Retreat Day twice during the Calendar Year.  You will also be asked to renew your commitment to this ministry annually.  The Ministry contact is Natalie Koffler at Natalie@koffler.com.

Ministers of Hospitality (formally called Ushers and Greeters)

Ministers of Hospitality are a special breed: welcoming, warm,   always ready to help or to answer questions. They are the first people that  worshippers meet when they arrive for our weekend liturgies and are the ones who send them on their way with a smile at the end of Mass.  Ministers of Hospitality help everyone who comes to St. Joseph Community to feel welcome and free to celebrate.
Our Ministers of Hospitality assist with the collection and help distribute the bulletins after Mass.  They invite a family to present the gifts of bread and wine at the Offertory. They also provide the invaluable service of being “point persons” in case of emergencies.
Ministers usually serve at the same Mass each weekend, and therefore, get to know who are parishioners and who are visitors to our community, thus sharing hospitality on all levels.  These ministers are also asked at times to serve at special liturgies, as their own schedule and preference allows.  For more information, please contact Eric Bertelsen, 510-995-9404.

Music Ministries

Basilica Choir

It’s been said that those who raise their voice in song in praise of God pray twice.  That’s certainly true of our highly regarded Basilica Choir, which leads the assembly in song at the 9:30am Mass every Sunday from  mid-September through June.  They also perform a special concert at Christmastime and an Americana Concert around the July 4th holiday each year.  While being able to read music is not a requirement for choir members, it helps to have some knowledge of the mechanics of reading a score.  The music ranges from Classical to Baroque to American and African Spirituals, traditional Catholic music and even some Hebrew music.
The choir members have a weekly practice on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm in the Basilica. David Howitt, Music Director at St. Joseph,  conducts the choir.  If you are interested in joining, you may contact David Howitt at 510-995-9403, or Sue Spiersch at 510-522-8431.

7 pm Spirit Ensemble

Music Ministry leads the assembly in song.  In tune with the needs of the assembly, it is unparalleled in its ability to arouse the singing voice of the faith community and to empower people to live their lives in the service of the Gospel.  Music moves the soul and opens our eyes to God’s abundance.
The members of the Spirit Ensemble provide musical enhancement and leadership for our 7pm Sunday liturgy.  They are ethnically diverse in their membership and musicality.  Combining dedicated musicianship and enthusiasm, and incorporating various musical instruments and vocalists, they lead us in praise and worship with much joy and grace.

All are welcome to join in this ministry!  Practices are held each Thursday evening at 7:30 pm and on Sundays beginning at 5:15 pm leading up to the 7 pm Sunday liturgy.

Interested in lending your voice and/or your instruments?  Please contact Michael Chinnavaso at mchinnavaso@gmail.com.

Children’s Choir

The Children’s Choir engages the young people of our community (2nd through 6th grades) in the celebration of liturgy and the joy of music.  Children rehearse weekly on Thursday afternoons during the school year from 4:15—5pm, and sing during the 9:30am Sunday Mass every 6 to 8 weeks, and at occasional parish events.  Adults help with rehearsals and performances.  For more information you may contact Sue Spiersch at 510-522-8431 or e-mail her at  Alamedakid@sbcglobal.net.

Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is an international association of Catholics who work for their own sanctification and the sanctification of all with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mediatrix of all Graces. There are Active and Auxiliary members.
Parishioners who join the Legion of Mary commit to the following:  daily recitation of five decades of the Rosary and a short Legion prayer.  The Active members faithfully attend the 1½ hour weekly meeting held either on Wednesday or Saturday at 8:35 am in the Parish Center and perform two hours of apostolic work each week.  The Legion of Mary is available to assist our parish priest in any Catholic Action. The Spiritual Exercises of  St. Ignatius

Do you desire a better understanding of God’s everlasting love for you?  Do you sometimes wonder whether you are following your desire or God’s and need a method to discern God’s call?  Would you like a new method for prayer and reflection?  If so, the Ignatian Exercises may be for you.
The Exercises help you to overcome your resistance to God’s call and become conscious of the Divine Presence in your everyday life.  Here at St. Joseph, the Exercises follow St. Ignatius’ format for busy people, allowing you to “go on retreat” without going away, a retreat in the midst of your daily life with private prayer, group sharing, and individual spiritual direction.  Past retreatants can continue the experience with a monthly gathering of the “Fifth Week.”  For information contact Anne Marie Fourré at afourre@sjbalameda.org or 510-995-9409.

Faith Formation

Children’s Faith Formation (CFF)

Our Children’s Faith Formation Team (Catechists and helpers) shares the Good News with the children of our community through classes, prayer and worship. We work with children from pre-kindergarten (age 4) through 8th grade who do not attend Catholic school, assisting their parents and guardians in sharing the basic beliefs and traditions of our faith. This includes the two-year sacramental preparation program for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, and preparation for Baptism for older children (working in conjunction with the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults).  Classes are held weekly during the school year (excluding holidays), usually on Sunday mornings or a weeknight.
Catechists prepare for and lead weekly classes, using provided texts and materials. (If working with a co-catechist, teachers might alternate  weeks).  Aides assist the catechist during class-time, helping with reading, crafts, etc.  A monitor supervises the facility for safety and locks up.
Responsibilities include being able to communicate faith effectively in word and action, patience, flexibility and openness. Catechists also require preparation time and attendance at occasional training or meetings, and if working in sacramental preparation will participate in occasional liturgical celebrations. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office or by contacting Anne Marie Fourré.

Registration forms are available HERE ,in the Parish Office or by contacting Anne Marie Fourré.

If you are interested in becoming a Catechist, Aide or Monitor, please contact Anne Marie Fourré, Director of Faith Formation 510-995-9409 or you can e-mail her at afourre@sjbalameda.org.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word  (CLW)

This ministry allows the children of our community (kindergarten through 5th grade) to celebrate the first part of the Mass at their level.  On Sunday mornings during the 9:30am Mass, the children gather with a team of adults who share the Gospel story with them in ways they can understand, using music, storytelling, and crafts.  They then return to their parents in church to celebrate the rest of the Mass with the broader parish community.
CLW invites adults or teens to serve as catechists to prepare for and present the gospel story in a manner suitable for the children; people to prepare the worship space with appropriate colors and symbols for the season; musicians to lead the children in song; aides to supervise the children and lead them to and from church; and runners to advise the presenter when it’s time to return to church.
Volunteers alternate with other ministry members to work once a month and attend occasional training or meetings. Contact Anne Marie Fourré, Director of Faith Formation at 510-995-9409 or e-mail at afourre@st-joseph-community.org

Infant Baptismal Preparation

The Infant Baptismal Preparation Program ministers to parents who request that their children be baptized at St. Joseph Basilica.  The Baptismal team interviews      parents and welcomes them into the parish community.  We strive to support parents in their most important endeavor, initiating their children into the faith.  Parents are asked to attend one two-hour class and the communal Baptism.

Baptismal Team Members facilitate communal baptism six times a year. The class and the Baptism take place over two consecutive Sunday afternoons.  The     Baptism Team also meets twice a year for review and retreat.  If you have two         Sundays a year, that you can give to our parishioners who request baptism for their children, then please think bout joining us in this very important ministry.  To become involved, please contact Eric Bertelsen, 510-995-9404.

Marriage Preparation

Marriage preparation at St. Joseph Community assists the engaged couple in evaluating their readiness to live the married life which, between two baptized persons, is a sacrament.  The primary effort is to help the couple better understand themselves and each other, as well as their commitment to living their vocation in and for the community of the Church.
Evenings for the Engaged are offered through the Alameda Deanery as a service in preparation for marriage.  Teams of couples from the four parishes are the leaders for these evenings of reflection and study.  Our parish Wedding Coordinator and Music Minister will work with you to prepare your Wedding  Liturgy.  For information or to begin the process of preparation for your wedding ceremony and marriage, please call
Fr. Fred Riccio at 510-995-9421. or email at friccio@sjbalameda.org

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

This process aids adults in becoming full members of the Catholic Church.  It is not a “class” but a spiritual journey of conversion, starting with an informal inquiry period followed by introduction to church teachings and tradition through scripture and liturgy.  This process is for those who are seeking Baptism as well as those baptized in another Christian tradition who wish to become Catholic.  Catholics who have never received First Eucharist or Confirmation are also welcome.  A variation exists for youth and older children who have not been baptized.

·         Sponsors are needed who are confirmed, practicing Catholics.  They must be friendly, open, able to listen, and willing to share their faith stories.  Attendance at special liturgies is required, as well as the ability and resolve to connect regularly with their candidate.

·         Volunteers are also needed to welcome and share their faith experience (short-term attendance at weekly sessions - either Sunday mornings or weeknights) or to provide hospitality (refreshments and a smile.

·         Catechists help with teaching and Breaking Open the Word (exploring Sunday scripture), generally on Sunday mornings.  Ability to work with either adults or children is helpful and attendance at occasional training or meetings is required.

If you are interested in either learning more about becoming Catholic or about sharing your faith with others, contact Anne Marie Fourré, Director of Faith Formation at 510-995-9409 or afourre@sjbalameda.org.

Special Religious Education (SPRED )

SPRED is a one-on-one program in the parishes of the Alameda Deanery (St. Albert’s, St. Barnabas, St. Joseph and St. Philip Neri) that assists children, teens and adults with special needs and learning disabilities in their on-going faith formation.  So they can learn and pray at their pace, SPRED is broken up into four (4) age groups:  6-11, 12-16, 17-21 and 22 and over.  Each is challenged to grow in faith, and to celebrate his or her unique gifts and dignity.
We usually meet twice a month, depending on the parish.  Catechist volunteers and participants are welcomeFor more information, please call Jacquie Lydon 510-523-1185 or
Susie Howard at 510-865-7446.

SERVICE AND OUTREACH

Alameda Food Bank

“Lord, where did we see you hungry and feed you?”  “At the Alameda Food Bank.”  This volunteer non-profit collects and distributes donated food to supplement the diets of over 500 families resident in Alameda – the “working poor” whose incomes do not quite provide enough for their families.  You can make a child smile, or an old woman weep tears of gratitude by providing the extras to make dinner tables healthy and happy.
You determine to what you are willing to commit. Collection tasks (from various farmer’s markets, supermarkets and other merchants or the Alameda County Food Bank) are typically once a week on a regular schedule and require a van, lifting 30-50 lbs, and saying thank you.  On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays every week, plus one Saturday per month, people are needed to sort, bag, and distribute bags of groceries to the clients.  This requires no more effort than grocery shopping for a hundred people.  For information or to volunteer, please contact David C. McGaffey at 510-521-6372.

Bronze Coast Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Are you prepared for the Big One? Want to help your neighbors when it hits? The St Joseph Parish Center parking lot is the central meeting place for the Bronze Coast Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and is where team members and other involved personnel looking to lend a hand will meet up in the event of a disaster affecting the neighborhood bordered by Grand Street to Willow Street, and Lincoln Avenue to the lagoon.
The Alameda CERT program is the organizational umbrella for neighborhood teams of trained volunteers who live and/or work in the City of Alameda. Under the guidance of the Alameda Fire Department, volunteers receive basic emergency response training, practice skills during neighborhood drills, and advocate neighborhood preparedness. Following a disaster, CERT volunteers provide aid and assistance to the limit of their training within coordinated relief operations to reduce the impact on their community, thereby supplementing other emergency services. CERT responds to community needs with a sense of urgency, care, impartiality, and humane treatment for all inhabitants.
The Bronze Coast CERT meets quarterly in the Damien Room on the second Thursday of each quarter (Feb/May/Aug/Nov) at 6:00pm. All are welcome. For information, please contact either Sean Petrie at 510-610-1010 or
scpetrie@yahoo.com, or Christina Brooks at 510-378-7445 or c_brooks03@yahoo.com

Angel Giving Project

The Angel Giving Project is an Advent Ministry that enables parishioners to anonymously provide Christmas gifts to needy Seniors, adults and children in the Alameda/Oakland community.
Names of individuals are obtained by contacting organizations, e.g., convalescent hospitals and homeless and children’s ministries. Labels are typed with the name and wish of each person.  Paper ornaments are prepared and decorated by children of the parish.  On the First Sunday of Advent, a table with the ornaments bearing the first name and wish of each person is placed in the church.  Parishioners take the ornaments, buy the gift, wrap it, and return it to the church.  The presents are collected after each Mass and later sorted by organization.  Between 400-500 gifts are delivered before Christmas.  At every step, ministers provide the hands that make what is the waiting of Advent become the joy of Christmas.
There is one planning meeting in September and one follow-up meeting in January.  We also get together the day the ornaments are placed in the church (usually the Saturday after Thanksgiving) and the day the presents are sorted (usually the Second or Third Sunday of Advent.) Contact Peggy Ritchie at
510-865-8352.

Collection Ministers

This ministry might not seem like a ministry, but it is!  Each Sunday, during the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses, ministers are needed to count and prepare our collections for banking.  These men and women offer their services to help lighten the load of the parish staff and to insure the accuracy and safekeeping of Sunday collections.
They perform a vital service and share community with each other by gathering together to count the collections one Sunday per month.  Responsible, careful and conscientious persons with the gifts of confidentiality, purpose and integrity are needed to provide this service, and to record the generosity  of our parishioners.  Anyone willing to give a couple of hours each month to this important ministry, please contact
Fr. Fred Riccio at 510-995-9421 or email at friccio@sjbalameda.org

Homeless/Shelter Services

This Ministry is an excellent opportunity to help our sisters and brothers pull through some of the hardest times of their lives, and for us to share the gifts we’ve been freely given.
Some projects that the members of this ministry are involved in are cooking for Midway Shelter, assisting St. Joseph Elementary School children in preparing and delivering Thanksgiving Food Baskets to families in need, sponsoring Back-To-School Drives, coordinating and organizing the Lenten Soup Meals, preparing Welcome Bags with basic necessity items for women and children coming into Midway Shelter, assisting with the Family Night program at Midway Shelter and helping the Angel Tree Committee collect wish lists from various shelters and delivering the gifts to the recipients.  For more information about this ministry you may contact Therese Hauer at 510-522-0418

Ministry of Little Things

Little things add up.  Being attentive to little things results in projects moving along peacefully and in good order.  This ministry was established to provide help in the parish for those many little things that crop up daily and that are not the responsibility of a specific ministry.  Some examples of ways to share your gifts and talents are: preparing parish mailings, working on special photocopy projects, typing, word processing, baking, cooking, helping with social events, etc.  It provides the opportunity to serve the community for those who do not have the time or the inclination to be involved in an on-going ministry.  Many of the “little things” are one-time-only or short-term projects.
This ministry has very little structure and no meetings. Your name will be put on a list, with information about your preferences for types of projects and when you can serve.  You will be called when help is needed. For more information you can call Pat Cronin at 510-521-0998, or MaryAnn Montandon.

Ministry To Seniors/Visitors to the Sick

These two ministries of St. Joseph Community have recently merged to become two "arms" of one ministry.   This ministry gives community members the opportunity to be ministers of laughter and joy, of concern and compassion, of hospitality and recognition.
Many Seniors are in need of a phone call, a visit, a caring person to listen and just be present to them.  Many are homebound, in nursing homes or hospitals, unable to get to Sunday Mass, and would like to receive the Eucharist.  Our Visitors to the Sick  provide this service.  A special project of the Ministry to Seniors is the Birthday Party for residents at the Alameda Care facility each  month.
Members of this ministry meet after the 8:00 AM Mass on the 2nd Saturday  every other month (except summer months) in the Sablan Room to share experiences and the varied activities of which each has been a part.  A training session is held in the Spring and a retreat in the Fall.   Interested in being part of this fulfilling ministry?
Contact Evelyn Nobela or Hermie Camerino at
510-522-0181.

Ministry to the Unemployed and the Underemployed

Do you hear the call to embrace the opportunity to be the ears, eyes and hands of Christ to those in need?  If so, this ministry is for you!  We are living in difficult times.  There is high unemployment and underemployment.  Many of our community members are in need of emotional support and need a safe place to vent their pain.
As a response to those in our community who may be unemployed or underemployed, a group of parishioners are willing to share their expertise in order to be of service.  This need will be approached in two ways, through one-on-one help and through small group training in areas of resume writing, interviewing, salary negotiations, networking and internet search skills, and follow-up skills. A list of mentors is available through either Fr. Rich or Sr. Toni.  If you have a need in this regard don’t hesitate to call 522-0181.  Fran Lai, one of the mentors, is the coordinator for this ministry.  You can contact Fran at
510 384-3895  or email at laifran@aol.com.

Quilters

St. Joseph Quilters are women who gather in the Parish Center on the second Tuesday of each month to create beautiful, warm covers out of almost nothing!  Time, patience, care and much love goes into each stitch and those who receive the handmade articles are blessed doubly by the warmth and the love sewn into them.
The Quilters also bring warmth and friendship to each other as they share life’s concerns and joys along with the quilting. We have created quilts for the children at Sophia House, and are happy when we can share the fruits of our labors with those in need.  All are welcome.  For more information, please call
Clara Peralta at 510-521-1010.

Rectory Assistants

Making a welcoming space for community members and others who come to the rectory is a vital ministry.  You are the first voice a caller hears, the first face a visitor sees.  By being yourself and sharing yourself and your gift of hospitality with all, you can be an invaluable asset to the work of God here at St. Joseph.
Scheduled usually for one night a week, volunteers work from 4:30 pm until 7:30 pm each evening except Friday, and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Training is needed to learn the phone system and various other procedures.  The front desk is a multi-task desk, and the volunteers should be able to handle incoming calls as well as answer questions when needed.  Sometimes clerical tasks are assigned during the time you are here.  To sign up or for more information, please call Mary Kovalitsky, 510-995-9420 or email mkovalitksy@sjbalameda.org.

St Joseph Garden Club

The St. Joseph Garden Club was formed by a group of women who loved      gardening and saw that the gardens of the parish plant needed attention.  They formed the Garden Club for the purpose of beautifying the grounds and were the driving force behind building a gathering space for the parish community.  Currently they help to maintain and plant certain areas of the parish gardens.  The Garden Club members sponsor the very popular annual “Gardens Galore” garden tour each May.  Proceeds from the garden tours have allowed them to establish Tuition-Assistance Funds in both of our schools and donate funds to the parish each year.  Monthly meetings are held, on the second Tuesday of the month in the Rectory Dining Room at 7pm.

For more information about the Garden Club activities you can contact Mary Ann Montandon, 510-865-1760 or Kitty Long at  510-522-4973

St. Vincent De Paul Society

Give the gift of immediate and personal assistance to those in need, drawing upon the resources of the community and the St. Vincent DePaul Society’s organization.  Make a difference in the St. Joseph Community.  Make our parish a welcoming place for all of its people.  Live the message of Matthew 25.
Regular meetings on the 4th Tuesday of each month, 7-7:30 PM in the rectory. Assistance at one or more weekend Masses for the 5th Sunday collection (4 per year). Training is optional but available and highly recommended.
For more information please contact:
Eileen Hamlin, 510-522-0181.

Sunday Coffee Social

This ministry is one of hospitality and welcome.  Ministers provide the opportunity for community members to gather and share the gift of each other after  Sunday morning Masses.  Either in the Gathering Space, or in the Learning Center, coffee and donuts provide the forum for sharing and conversation, which help to build community among us. Responsibilities include making the coffee, picking up the donuts, setting up before the 7:30am Mass and putting everything away after the 11:30am Mass.  Please contact Eric Bertelsen, 995-9404, for information about how you can be a part of this active ministry.

Young Ladies’ Institute - YLI

YLI is an organization of Catholic women dedicated to the Christian principles of charity and love.  Founded in San Francisco in 1887 by three young women inspired to help an ill friend, its purpose is to help others.  We offer support, friendship, leadership training and the opportunity to make a difference to those in need.
Through participation in YLI’s charitable projects you will have the opportunity to promote the work of the Church while working hand in hand with other Catholic women.  Each year the incoming president selects a program of charitable activities.  They include but are not limited to Special Olympics, Hospice, Children in Need, and Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Other spiritual, cultural and educational activities are also available.  For more information, or to join, please contact Helen Pacovsky at 510-522-2280.

Youth / Young Adults

Youth Ministry

Youth Ministry works within the parish to provide community prayer and fun events for teenagers. We seek to foster the faith life of our youth and provide them with social, spiritual and service opportunities.  Ministering with youth is a great gift -  they are fun to be around and teach adults new things as well.  Being part of the Youth   Ministry is a wonderful learning and teaching experience.  It passes on our faith in new ways to the young Church of today and tomorrow.

We prepare teens for the Sacrament of Confirmation, have a Youth Mass each month, and provide teens with opportunities for retreats, community service, peer   leadership development and small group experiences.  Each of these ministry areas has opportunities to get involved and volunteer with our youth, including volunteering to help with retreats, facilitating small groups, cooking or volunteering with office tasks.

Young Adults of Alameda

Young adults (18 to 35), married or single, have a unique opportunity to serve Christ and the Church. We combine the energy of youth with greater experience and independence. We celebrate our faith together through fellowship and social activities, service to others, and spiritual development. A  Steering Committee helps plan, organize and publicize events.  For more information on how you can be a part of this life-giving ministry, please Contact our Youth Minister Sarelle McCoard at 510-326-2390 or email her at youthministry2009@gmail.com

Young At Heart

Those of us who are a bit more “mature” (i.e. over 35) but enjoy the same      opportunities for social activities, service to the community and spiritual enrichment are welcome to join other formerly young adults for game nights, potlucks, service projects, monthly Mass, and/or faith sharing. Contact Raymond Cortes, 510-523-5233 or rymndcrts@yahoo.com  for more information.
